,000 mark for the first time in five years. but how does exxonmobil and chevron, two down energy stocks, and what is their impact on the move. josh lipton is with us. hi, josh. >> each sector has had a different role in the push it 14,000. first up, exxon which beat expectations on the bottom line on strong results and its chemical and refining businesses. but the oil giant also told us that it produced less oil and gas than it said it would back in march. stock right now, basically flat but since the peak in 2 thu 7, energy giant is actually down about 3% of the 880-something point we tacked on in 2013. exxon only contributed 26 points. then chevron, better than expected fourth quarter earnings as its refining business boosted profits. stock right now showing modest gains. but a better long-term story here. chevron is actually up about 24% since october 2007 and has added 60 points to this year's surge. worth noting, the role of the energy sector has also played in this broader rally between 2009 and 2013. energy lagged one of the reasons for nervousness last year, investors anticipate

alternative energy strategies. i fed question for assists in ministry to mccarthy and that is last week d.c. circuit court of appeals issued a decision vacating the sale of ethanol targets under the fuel standard to which was set up by congress under the energy independent security act of 2007 and although upheld most of the parts of the fuel standards too. i was wondering what your reaction was to that decision and to cup whether epa is going to appeal that and thirdly generally the upcoming congressional debate on the future of the renewable fuel standard's? thank you. >> thanks for the question. it opens up a whole other can of worms that we could talk about a lot but what i will say is that we were disappointed in the decision. i don't have any news for you on whether or not we attend -- and tend to appeal but the decision was very narrow one. is basically said that we were looking actually too closely at tying in the levels we were projecting for cellulosic. too much to the goals that congress intended as opposed to the direct data we had in hand. we will be listening to that decis

and regulatory affairs and deals with energy and environmental research. how do you explain your job? it is a fantastic place to be. i'm at the intersection of public policy and advanced technology for environment and safety. if it is a fantastic deal to be in now. it is the wave of the future. advanced vehicles, and advanced technologies. we work with the government on regulatory issues, collect a lot of information on the future of energy, where it's headed in the u.s. and globally. and we tried to use the information to help steer toyota's advanced development. guest: one of the high points is greenhouse gases and fuel economy for our vehicles. the auto industry has signed up for some fairly aggressive standards that will take us to the 2025 model year. they are aggressive standards. consumers will have to embrace the technologies we're trying to get out there. host: what does that really mean? guest: the target is 54 miles per hour by 2025. we have a lot of work to do. our strategy is are hybrid strategy. toyota had 16% of our new vehicle fleet were hybrid vehicles. the industry
